Configure Menu Item Modifiers for POS
The Modifiers command on the POS Maintenance menu allows you to add (and remove) specific modifiers for menu items. Modifiers can include all kinds of different items, such as:
- Sandwich or hamburger options, like lettuce, tomato, cheese, mayonnaise;
- Menu item add-ons, such as sauteed onions, extra meat, or extra cheese, particularly those that include an added charge;
- Salad options, like salad dressings or salad add-ons like chicken, steak or salmon.
- Drink options, like cream or sugar for coffee, whipped cream for hot chocolate, or no ice for cold drinks.
NOTE: All available modifiers for all types of food in all restaurants must be added to this list. You will associate the modifiers with specific menu items when you configure the Menu Items for the system.
Select Modifiers from the Menu Items Setup section of the Point of Sale (POS) Maintenance menu.
The Modifiers Maintenance screen has two sides.
The left side of the screen lists any already configured modifiers.
The right side contains the fields you need to complete in order to add or edit a modifier for the menu items in your restaurants. Your options include the following:
- Click the New button from the toolbar to add a new modifier. Complete the fields described below.
- Select an existing modifier from the list on the left, and click the Replicate button from the toolbar. Then change the field information as described below. This is useful if you are configuring multiple similar items that all have the same price and posting type associated with them, such as steak or baked potato add-ons.
- Select an existing modifier from the list on the left and click the Delete button from the toolbar. This removes the modifier option from the system.
- Enter a number into the List Order field. This determines where each modifier appears listed in the interface. This field is optional. If no order is specified, the modifiers will appear in alphabetical order in the interface. Keep in mind also that only the specified modifiers will appear for each menu item (as you configure it). For example, the salad dressing modifiers may only appear for salad items. This helps limit the list length that wait staff have to choose from.
- Enter a Modifier Name. This is the label that appears for the modifier option in the interface. This field is required. Be sure to use a label that wait staff can easily identify to select for the specified menu items.
- If there is an associated charge for the modifier, enter a Price and select a Posting Type. While these fields are optional for modifiers, the Posting Type field is REQUIRED if there is a Price. All charges must have a posting type. If the posting type you need does not appear in the list, you may need to edit the Posting Types configuration for the system.
NOTE: Preparations are different than Modifiers: Preparations include HOW something is to be prepared. Preparations are configured separately from Modifiers.
When you are finished adding or editing menu item modifiers, click the Save button to save the changes.
